FAQ
I hope
you have come to our web site because you want to learn more about the
work of the Spelman Medical Foundation. Wonderful! We are eager to tell
you what we are doing to make the residents of Kansas City Northland the
healthiest in America. We invite you to join us in this effort. Here are
some frequently asked questions.
What
is the relationship between Spelman Medical Foundation and Saint Luke’s
Northland Hospital? The Spelman Medical Foundation originally served
as the fund raising arm of the Spelman Memorial Hospital in Smithville.
In the 1990’s, after decades of operating as a successful rural hospital,
Spelman Memorial Hospital joined with Saint Luke’s Health Care System to
offer services at Barry Road as well as Smithville. Eventually, the two
institutions merged into the one entity with two campuses, now known as
Saint Luke’s Northland Hospital (SLNH). In 1994, the Spelman Medical
Foundation elected to serve the new joint entity, but reserved its
original name and an independent governing board. This independence is
one of the foundation’s strengths, just as the affiliation with SLNH
offers the foundation a great opportunity for making a difference for the
community. Our office is located in the Barry Medical Park on the Barry
Road campus of SLNH.
What
is the relationship between Spelman Medical Foundation and Saint Luke’s
Foundation? Saint Luke’s Foundation serves primarily the original Saint
Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza. Spelman Medical Foundation supports and
partners with Saint Luke’s Northland Hospital.
Biggest Project? The Spelman Medical Foundation's biggest project is
the opening of the Center for Women's Care. The foundation raised over $2
million dollars to fund this Center. Click on the link "Center for
Women" for more information.

Can my
organization ask for funding?
At this
time, our only community health care grants to the community are in the
form of higher education scholarships. For more information about health
care scholarships contact the foundation. Eventually, we would like to be
able to give other health care grants to the community.
How
can I get involved? We would love to have your help, and help you
stay healthy. See “how can I get involved” selection on the top menu.
